'나쁜'의 어원은 '나뿐', '좋은'의 뿌리는 '주는'이다.
우리는 탐욕의 포퓰리즘에 빠졌다. 요즘 ‘대박 대박’ 하는데 대박은 누군가의 ‘쪽박’이다. ‘나쁜’ 꿈이다. ‘나쁜’의 어원은 ‘나뿐’이다. 불교의 아상(我相)이다. 깨뜨려야 한다. 반대로 ‘좋은’의 뿌리는 ‘주는’이다. 대박 대신 ‘소박’을 되찾자.

서양철학사에서 분석철학의 토대를 닦은 루드비히 비트겐슈타인은 보석과도 같은 인물입니다. 스승인 버트란트 러셀이 “나보다 더 뛰어난 철학자”라고 평했고, 경제학자 존 메이너드 케인스는 그를 신으로 칭송했습니다. 기계와 음악에도 조예가 깊은 천재였습니다. 절대음감을 갖고 있었고 교향곡 전체를 외어 휘파람으로 불었다고 합니다.
비트겐슈타인은 형이 네 명 있었는데 불행히도 세 명이 모두 자살로 생을 마감했습니다. 네 째 형은 예외였습니다. 그가 바로 1961년 오늘(3월 3일) 미국 뉴욕에서 74세에 세상을 떠난 피아니스트 파울 비트겐슈타인입니다.
파울은 26세 때 음반을 내고 공식 데뷔했지만 이듬해 1차 세계대전이 발발해 오스트리아 군인으로 참전해야 했습니다. 그는 우크라이나 전투에서 러시아군과 싸우다 팔꿈치에 총상을 입고 잡혔습니다. 결국 오른 팔을 절단했습니다.
파울은 세 형처럼 약하지 않았습니다. 그는 시베리아 옴스크 포로수용소에서 왼손으로도 피아노를 칠 수 있다고 자신을 다잡았습니다. 스승인 장님 피아니스트 요셉 라보르에게 편지를 보내 자신을 위한 편곡을 요청했고 스승은 기꺼이 응했지요.
전쟁이 끝나고 조국 오스트리아로 돌아오자 당대 최고의 음악가들이 그를 위해 곡을 썼습니다. 모리스 라벨의 ‘왼손을 위한 피아노협주곡’은 지금도 명곡으로 꼽히지요.
