Description and Interpretation
This artwork was painted during the first week Vincent van Gogh stayed at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, in the south of France. Although he was battling severe anxiety and illness at the time, he found peace and artistic inspiration by looking at the irises blooming in the hospital garden.
The blue irises filling the canvas undulate in different directions, emitting an intense vitality. The vivid blue color contrasting with the reddish-brown earth, and the method of drawing clear outlines, show the influence of Japanese woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) that he was deeply engrossed in at the time. The single white iris on the left side of the canvas stands out among the group, often interpreted as reflecting the lonely artist himself.

이 작품은 빈센트 반 고흐가 프랑스 남부 생레미(Saint-Rémy)에 있는 요양원에 머물던 첫 주에 그린 그림입니다. 당시 그는 극심한 불안과 병마와 싸우고 있었지만, 병원 정원에 피어난 붓꽃(Iris)을 보며 평안을 찾고 예술적 영감을 얻었습니다.
