유래	옛날 태양 신(神)을 숭배하며 살아가는 마을에 로즈라는 아름다운 아가씨가 살았다. 태양신을 숭배하여 주로 낮에 활동을 하는 마을 사람들과 달리 그녀는 낮보다 밤을 좋아했고, 태양보다 달을 더 좋아했다. 마을에서는 해마다 여름철이 되면 축제가 벌어지는데 밤이되면 큰 행사가 벌어졌다. 15세된 처녀들이 곱게 단장을 하고 한 줄로 늘어서 있으면 총각이 한 사람씩 나와서 마음에 드는 처녀를 골라 결혼을 하는 행사였다. 이 때, 상대를 고르는 순서는 엄격히 정해져 있었다. 전쟁에서 적을 많이 죽였거나 평소에 많은 사냥을 해 오는 사람, 또는 부락에 공이 큰 총각부터 마음에 드는 처녀를 고를 수 있었다. 청혼을 받으면 절대로 거절할 수 없었다. 로즈가 14세가 되었을 때 축제를 구경하고 집으로 돌아가고 있었다. 형제 부족의 추장집에서 5년동안 교육을 받고 돌아오는 추장의 작은 아들을 만났고, 로즈는 그에게 마음이 갔다. 이튿날 밤 달을 구경하고 있는 로즈에게 추장의 작은 아들이 다시 찾아왔다. 태양보다 달을 좋아하는 로즈의 눈에는 추장의 큰 아들은 태양이고, 작은 아들은 달로 생각되었다. 1년 뒤 다시 돌아온 축제 날, 로즈는 1년 동안 사귄 추장의 작은 아들이 자기를 원하리라 믿었다. 그러나 추장의 작은 아들은 로즈 옆에 있던 다른 처녀를 선택했다. 실망한 로즈는 다른 총각의 청혼을 뿌리치고 밖으로 뛰쳐나갔다지만 병사들에게 붙잡혀 끌려왔고, 낮에는 뜨거운 햇볕이 내려쬐고 밤이면 온갖 짐승들과 귀신이 들끓는 귀신의 골짜기로 추방되었다. 로즈는 그곳에서 달님을 바라보며 추장의 작은 아들을 손꼽아 기다렸다. 1년이 흐른 후 추장의 아들은 사람의 눈을 피해 그녀를 찾아 나섰다. 골짜기에서 큰 소리로 불렀으나 대답이 없었다. 그는 달빛에 비친 한 송이 꽃을 보았다. 죽어서 꽃으로 변한 로즈는 밤이 오면 달을 보고 피어났다. 추장의 작은 아들과 사랑을 시작한 지 2년 만에 죽은 것처럼 달맞이꽃도 두해살이풀이 되었다.
