공자(孔子)가 들려주는 孝 이야기 박재희 여러분들은 부모님에게 어떻게 효도를 하고 계십니까? 사실 효도를 계획을 세워놓고 한다는 것, 전통적인 효의 입장에서 보면 진정한 의미의 효는 아닌 듯합니다. 효도는 항상 하는 상식적 개념이지 ’언제’라고 하는 한시적 개념이 아니기 때문이죠. 집안에서 부모와 원만한 관계를 가지지 못하고 사회에서 제 몫을 다한다는 것은 쉽지 않은 일이라고 합니다. 누구나 하겠다는 생각은 들지만 막상 효도를 어떻게 할 것인가에 대한 고민은 한번쯤 해보셨습니까? 공자가 논어 속에서 들려주는 효에 대한 이야기를 오늘 몇 가지 말씀드려 보겠습니다. 첫째, 공자는 공경함이 없는 물질적 봉양만이 효도는 아니라고 합니다. 어느 날 공자의 제자였던 자유(子遊)가 효는 물질적 봉양이 무엇보다 중요하다고 생각하며 그 효에 대하여 공자에게 물었습니다. 그때 공자는 이렇게 대답하죠. "요즘 사람들 효도하는 방법은 그저 부모님에게 물질적인 봉양만 잘해주면 된다고 생각하는데, 그런 물질적인 봉양은 자신이 아끼는 개나 말한테도 할 수 있는 것 아니겠는가. 그러니 진정으로 부모를 공경하는 마음이 없이 그저 물질적 봉양만 해준다면 이것은 자기가 아끼는 개나 말에게 잘 먹이고 잘해주는 것과 무슨 차이가 있겠는가(今之孝者는 是謂能養이니 至於犬馬라도 皆能有養이니라. 不敬이면 何以別乎이요)." 공경함이 없이 그저 부모에게 물질적으로만 잘해주는 것, 그것만 갖고는 자신이 아끼는 애완견과 비교해서 다름이 없다는 아주 날카로운 공자의 지적입니다. 어버이날 효도 관광 시켜주고 다달이 통장에 용돈 자동이체 하는 것, 그것만으로는 효도라고 하는 것이 아니라는 것이죠. 사실 따지고 보면 현대 사회에서 부모님에게 물질적인 측면으로 최선을 다하는 사람도 찾기 힘든 것이 현실입니다. 그러나 그 물질적인 봉양에 공경하는 마음이 베어 있다면 정말 아름다운 효도가 아닐까요? 둘째 공자는 자식이 아프지 않고 그저 건강하게 사는 것, 이것도 효도라고 이야...

위대한 3인의 이야기 박재희 권세를 빌어 으스대는 것은 예나 지금이나 다반사인 듯싶습니다. 세상에서 가장 교만한 사람이 어떤 사람일 것 같습니까? 돈이 많은 부자거나 지위가 높은 사람은 의외로 교만함이 적다고 합니다. 힘 있고 돈이 많은 그들이기에 거기서 교만하기까지 하면 잃는 것이 너무나 많기 때문이지요. 사실 그들보다 더 교만한 사람들은 그들의 측근이나 주변사람들일 겁니다. 비서나 운전기사 심지어 그 집의 가정부까지도 자신이 모시는 사람의 그 권세를 빌어 으스대는 것은 예나 지금이나 다반사인 듯싶습니다. 춘추시대 말기 제나라라고 하는 나라의 명재상이었던 안영을 모시던 마부 역시 이런 유형의 사람이었습니다. 마차 뒤에 주인인 안영을 모시고 거리를 나갈 때 모든 백성들이 고개를 숙여 예를 표하는 것을 보고 그 마부는 마치 자신에게 그들이 인사하는 것이라고 착각한 겁니다. 그럴수록 그 마부의 어깨는 더욱 올라갈 수밖에 없었고, 그 마부의 교만함은 더욱 거세어져만 갔습니다. 사실 그는 뒤에 앉아 있는 안영보다 키도 크고 얼굴도 훨씬 잘생긴 그런 사람이었습니다. 그런데 어느 날 그 마부의 부인은 문틈을 통해서 의기양양하게 말을 모는 남편의 모습을 보고 슬픔에 빠져 버립니다. 저녁 때 마부가 집으로 돌아오니 그 부인은 남편에게 집을 나가겠다고 선언하며 이렇게 말했습니다. 부모님의 또다른 이름….. “희생” 도쿄의 일류대 졸업생인 청년은 한 회사에 이력서를 냈다. 사장이 면접 자리에서 의외의 질문을 던졌다. " 부모님을 목욕시켜드리거나 닦아드린 적이 있습니까?" "한번도 없습니다." 청년은 정직하게 대답했다. "그러면 , 부모님의 등을 긁어 드린 적은 있나요?" 청년은 잠시 생각했다. 인생은 나를 찾아 가는 일 삶이란 참으로 복잡하고 아슬아슬합니다. 걱정이 없는 날이 없고 부족함을 느끼지 않는 날이 없으니까요 어느 것 하나 결정하거나 결심하는 것도 쉽지 않습니다. 내일을 알 수 없어 늘 흔들리기 때문이지요. 말로는 쉽게 "행복하다", "기쁘다"고 하지만, 누구에게나 힘든 일은 있기 마련입니다. 얼마만큼 행복하고 어느 정도 기쁘게 살아가고 있는지 알 수는 없지만, 그저 모두들 바쁩니다. 나이 들고 건강을 잃으면 "아! 이게 아닌데..."하는 생각을 하게 될 터인데,, 왜 그렇게 열심히 어디를 향해, 무엇 때문에 바쁘게 가는 건지 모를 일입니다. 결국, 인생은 내가 나를 찾아 갈 뿐인데 말입니다. 고통,갈등 ,불안, 등등은 모두 나를 찾기까지의 과정에서 만나는 것들입니다. 나를 만나기 위해서 이렇게 힘든 것입니다 나를 찾은 그 날부터 삶은 고통에서 기쁨으로, 좌절에서 열정으로, 복잡함에서 단순함으로, 불안에서 평안으로 바뀝니다. 이것이야말로 각자의 인생에서 만나는 가장 극적이 순간이요, 가장 큰 기쁨입니다. 아무리 화려해도 몸에 맞지 않는 옷을 입으면 불편 하듯이, 아무리 멋진 풍경도 마음이 다른데 있으면, 눈에 들어오지 않듯이,, 내가 아닌 남의 삶을 살고 있으면 늘 불안합니다. 잠깐 쉬면서 나를 먼저 돌아 보십시오, 내가 보일때 행복과 기쁨도 찾아 옵니다. 오늘도 잠깐 돌아보고 출발 하시길... 모셔온 글 받은 글입니다.

더하기와 빼기 세월이 더하기를 할수록 삶은 자꾸 빼기를 하고 욕심이 더하기를 할수록 행복은 자꾸 빼기를 한다. 똑똑한 사람은 더하기만 잘 하는 것이 아니고 빼기도 잘 하는 사람이다. 훌륭한 사람은 벌기만 잘 하는 것이 아니고 나누어 주기도 잘 하는 사람이다.

不怨天不尤人(불원천불우인) 박재희 안녕하십니까? 박재희입니다. 자고 나면 터지는 숱한 사건 주변에는 서로에게 책임을 전가하고 잘못을 탓하는 공방전이 벌어진다. 아랫사람은 윗사람을 끌어내리려 하고, 윗사람은 아랫사람을 능멸하려 한다. 당사자는 상황에 책임을 돌리고, 방관자는 당사자에게 모든 책임을 지라고 한다. 모든 책임은 나에게 있는 것이 아니라 남에게 있다는 책임 전가가 사회에 만연되어 있다. 아무도 책임지려 하지 않는 그런 사회를 살고 있는 것이다. 성숙한 사람은 남에게 책임을 묻지 않는다. 군자와 선비는 자신에게 책임을 묻는 사람이다. 불원천(不怨天)! 하늘을 원망하지 말라! 불우인(不尤人)! 남을 탓하지 마라! 선비들이 인생을 살다가 어렵고 힘든 상황에 처할 때 마다 외쳤던 인생의 화두였다. 에 나오는 ‘내 탓이오!’ 철학은 남 탓으로 자신의 잘못을 가리려 하는 오늘날 세태에 책임의식이 무엇인지를 잘 보여준다. ‘재상위불릉하(在上位不陵下)! 윗자리에 있는 사람들이여! 아랫사람을 함부로 능멸하지 마라! 재하위불원상(在下位 不援上)! 아랫자리에 있는 사람들이여! 함부로 윗사람을 끌어내리려 하지 마라! 정기이불구어인즉무원(正己而不求於人則無怨)! 나를 먼저 바르게 하고 남을 탓하지 말라! 그러면 누구에게도 원망을 사지 않을 것이다. 상불원천(上不怨天)! 위로는 하늘을 원망하지 말고, 하불우인(下不尤人)! 아래로는 남을 허물하지 말라!’ '중용'에 나오는 명 구절이다. 세상을 살다보면 힘들고 어려운 일이 닥치기 마련이다. 그럴 때 마다 조상을 탓하고, 하늘을 원망하고, 주변 사람을 허물하면 결국 그 역경과 고통은 더욱 나를 힘들게 할 뿐이다. 세상의 모든 잘못을 결국 나에게 있다는 생각은 아름답다. 남을 탓하거나 원망하는 것보다 자신을 먼저 돌아보는 것이 진정 책임질 줄 아는 사람의 모습이기 때문이다. 그래서 당당하게 자신의 책임을 인정하고 내 탓이라고 외칠 수 있는 사람은 존경을 받을 수밖에 없다. 공...

노랑제비꽃 봄이 오면 찾아가는 제 고향 뒷산에 저만 알고 있는 노랑제비꽃 군락지가 있습니다. 꽃샘바람 매운 산기슭 묵은 낙엽 사이로 빼꼼히 얼굴을 내밀고 환하게 웃고 있는 노랑제비꽃. 그 귀여운 모습 보고 싶어 봄마다 찾아가지만 무작정 찾아간다고 아무 때나 만날 수는 없습니다. 어느 때는 너무 일러 꽃이 피지 않았고 어느 때는 너무 늦어 이미 지고 없습니다. 사람처럼 미리 약속하고 만날 수도 없는 꽃이라 어쩌다 못 만나고 돌아설 때면 허탈한 마음에 죄 없는 노랑제비꽃을 원망한 적도 있었습니다. 하지만 산을 내려오며 곰곰 생각해 보니 순전히 때를 맞추지 못한 나의 잘못이었다는 뉘우침과 함께 때를 맞춘다는 것이 얼마나 중요한 지 새삼 깨닫게 되었습니다. 내일 모레는 그리운 사람들 모두 만나는 즐거운 설날입니다. 때를 놓치고 후회하는 일 없도록 그리운 사람 모두 만나 서로 정을 나누며 노랑제비꽃처럼 환하게 웃는 행복한 명절 보내세요. 새해 복 많이 받으세요. 글.사진 - 백승훈 사색의향기님(culppy@culppy.org)께서 보내주신 향기메일입니다
