Joan Miró, Jeune fille à l'étoile, 1977

Joan Miró, Jeune fille à l'étoile, 1977

Joan Miró, Jeune fille à l'étoile, 1977, Bronze, 48 x 33 x 40 cm, Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul

Let’s take a look at this fascinating piece titled 'Jeune fille à l'étoile' (Young Girl with a Star), created by the Surrealist master Joan Miró in 1977.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that this isn’t a traditional figure. Miró was a genius of assemblage, where he took everyday objects or found shapes and combined them into poetic, new forms. Here, a rectangular slab serves as the body or a canvas, featuring a deeply incised star—one of the most iconic symbols in Miró’s visual language.
To Miró, the star represented a connection between the earthly world and the vast, infinite cosmos. The organic shape rising from the top might remind you of a head or a torso, giving the bronze a surprisingly human, "living" quality.

The weathered texture of the bronze gives it a timeless, almost prehistoric feel, as if it were an artifact unearthed from a dream. It’s a wonderful example of how Miró could take something heavy and solid like bronze and make it feel light, whimsical, and full of wonder. Don't worry about finding a "correct" meaning—just let your imagination wander through the shapes!

[In California]
Annie Hall: It's so clean out here.
Alvy Singer: That's because they don't throw their garbage away, they turn it into television shows.
