Global Daily History: February 18, 2026

Good morning. I’m Emma with your history snapshot for February 18th.

We begin in the cosmos. Today is a massive day for space exploration. In 1930, astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto, expanding the boundaries of our known solar system. Fast forward to 2021, and history was made again as NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully touched down on Mars, beginning a new search for ancient life.

Back on Earth, a literary revolution occurred in 1885. Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in the United States. It became a defining masterpiece that challenged the social consciousness of a nation.

And finally, we pause for a solemn anniversary. In 2003, a tragic arson attack on the Daegu Metropolitan Subway in South Korea claimed 192 lives. It remains a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of public safety.

From the Red Planet to the pages of history, that is your briefing for February 18th. Have a nice day.

Global Daily History: February 16

Good morning. Today, February 16th, marks several turning points that shaped our world.

In 1923, the silence of three millennia was broken in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Archaeologist Howard Carter unsealed the burial chamber of King Tutankhamun, revealing the boy king’s golden sarcophagus and sparking a global fascination with Ancient Egypt that continues to this day.

In 1959, the geopolitical landscape of the Americas shifted permanently. Fidel Castro was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Cuba, cementing a revolutionary socialist state just 90 miles from the United States.

In 1968, a lifeline was born in Haleyville, Alabama. The very first 9-1-1 emergency call was placed, inaugurating a universal emergency system that has since saved countless lives across the nation.

And finally, in 2005, a major step for the planet. The Kyoto Protocol officially went into effect, binding major industrial nations to targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a historic effort to combat climate change.

That’s the way it was on this day in history.
