이 문장은 to의 앞에서 끊어 번역하면, “자넨 뚜껑이 열린 맨홀에 빠지기를 얼마나 원하는가?”라는 뜻이다. 제대로 번역하자면, “자넨 뚜껑이 없는 맨홀에 빠지고 싶은 생각은 없겠지?”라고 묻는 말이다. 하지만 to의 다음에서 문장을 끊으면, “자넨 뚜껑이 없는 맨홀에 빠지는 대가로 얼마를 받고 싶은가?”라는 엉뚱한 말이 된다.
