Vincent van Gogh, Almond Blossom, 1890

Vincent van Gogh, Almond Blossom, 1890

(Vincent van Gogh, 1853–1890)

(Almond blossom)

Almond Blossoms

Masterpiece of February: Vincent van Gogh, Almond Blossom, 1890

A Message of Hope Signaling Spring

Hello.

February is a month where the cold winter wind still lingers, yet we eagerly await the warm spring in a corner of our hearts. I have selected an artwork that perfectly fits this seasonal transition. The piece I am introducing today is Almond Blossom painted by Vincent van Gogh for his most beloved family member.

This artwork perfectly expresses the boundary between winter and spring with its cool blue background and the white flower buds stretching over it. It is an impeccable piece to keep on your desktop or in your daily life in February as we prepare for a new beginning.

□  Artwork Overview

Artist : Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)

Title : Almond Blossom

Series title: Almond Blossoms

Object type: painting

Genre: floral painting

Year : February 1890

Medium : Oil on canvas

Dimensions : 73.5 cm by 92 cm

Collection : Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

□  Artist Introduction

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post Impressionist painter. During his short life of 37 years, he captured the inner human spirit and the beauty of nature on canvas with intense colors and rough brushstrokes. Although he was not widely recognized during his lifetime and suffered from poverty and mental anguish, he is now considered one of the greatest and most influential painters in Western art history.

□  Detailed Artwork Description

This painting was created in February 1890, the last year of Van Gogh's life, while he was at the asylum in Saint Remy, France. At that time, Van Gogh received a letter from his brother Theo announcing the birth of his son. His brother named the son Vincent after him. Greatly inspired and overjoyed by the news of his nephew's birth, Van Gogh painted this piece as a gift to hang in the baby's room.

In Southern France, almond trees are among the first to bloom in early spring, specifically in February. To Van Gogh, almond blossoms symbolized vitality, hope, and a new beginning that overcomes the cold winter.

Examining the style, one can see the influence of Ukiyo e, the Japanese prints that Van Gogh admired. The branches boldly stretch out of the frame, and the background is filled with a flat blue color, excluding traditional perspective. The thick outlines and bold composition maximize decorative beauty and deliver a clear and pure impression to the viewer.

Vincent van Gogh, Two Peasant Women, 1890

Van Gogh used the women from Millet's The Gleaners as inspiration for this painting of women digging in the frozen snow. Unlike the others, this work is not a literal translation of the original painting. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the fields of snow. The cool colors of the field contrast to the red in the sun and sky. Jan Hulsker places the painting as one of van Gogh's "reminisces of the North".[1]

Vincent van Gogh, Snow-Covered Field with a Harrow (after Millet), January 1890

Van Gogh used Millet's work, and Alfred Delaunay's etching of Millet's work, as inspiration for this painting. In Van Gogh's version he added black crows and made the winter scene more bleak, deserted and cold. His choice of color, composition and brushstroke make this work uniquely his own.[1]

The overall structure of the work is reproduced as a part of the building and serves as a passage between the past and the future through stairs and a door. The rectangular structure of the wall and the black border of the outer shell reinforce the boundaries of the wall, giving it an independent existence, like an urban icon.

Artists, Émile Zola

"The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work."

- Émile Zola

This quote emphasizes the balance between natural talent and hard work. It suggests that while an artist’s innate talent (the gift) is essential, it is not enough on its own. Without dedication, effort, and continuous practice (work), the talent cannot reach its full potential. Essentially, both the gift and the work are equally important for an artist to truly succeed and create meaningful art.

"Every artist was once an amateur."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

The quote “Every artist was once an amateur” means that everyone starts as a beginner, regardless of their current level of skill or success. It emphasizes that even the most talented and accomplished individuals began their journey with little to no experience. The quote encourages people to persevere and continue practicing, as growth and improvement come with time and effort. It’s a reminder that it’s okay to start small and make mistakes, as these are essential parts of the learning process.

"Painting is just another way of keeping a diary."

- Pablo Picasso

This quote, often attributed to Pablo Picasso, suggests that painting can serve as a personal record of one’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences, much like a diary. Just as a diary captures the writer’s inner world through words, a painting captures the artist’s emotions, ideas, and moments in time through visual expression. Each brushstroke, color choice, and composition can reflect the artist’s state of mind and personal journey, making the artwork a visual diary of their life.
