일을 하라고 했을 때 부하가 계속 여건이 어떠니 변수가 어떠하니 하면서 제대로 업무역할을 정의할 것이 필요하다고 "정확히 어떻게 일을 해야하는지 정해줘야 일을 할 수 있다"고 토를 달 때... 사장은 미쳐버린다.

사장은 "죽이 되든 밥이 되든 상관 없으니까 그냥 다 알아서 해라."이렇게 나올 수 밖에 없다. 아무리 작은 회사라도 그러하다.

"Exactly how do you want me to do this?"

"I don't care how you do it, just get it done."

8 Sentences That Drive Bosses Crazy

Being the boss is difficult enough without employees saying things that add confusion and misdirection to the process.

If you've got a boss, set a mental flag to stop yourself if you hear one of these sentences coming out of your own mouth. And if you are the boss, here's what to say to train your employees to stop saying them.

1. "Exactly how do you want me to do this?"

The boss's job is to ensure that everyone on the team is going in the same direction and working to achieve the same goals. Unless the employee is a novice who needs coaching, it's the employee's job to handle the specific details of his or her tasks.

Boss's best response: "I don't care how you do it, just get it done."

2. "This is my idea so I want full credit for it."

Good ideas are essential, but they're also a dime-a-dozen. Once an employee surfaces an idea to the boss and the rest of the team, and everyone commits to implement it, the original idea becomes group property.

Boss's best response: "If you want this to happen, we'll all need to own it."

3. "I'll try to get it done on time."

When bosses are coordinating the activities of multiple people, they need to know what's going to happen and when. Adding the element of "maybe" inherent in the phrase "I'll try" makes good planning almost impossible.

Boss's best response: "Do. Or do not. There is no try."

4. "I need you to review this 300 page document."

Such requests are disrespectful because no boss--at least no boss who's doing his or her job--the time to wade through a 300 page document. Just as bosses try to clear the way to make employee's jobs easier, employees must be respectful of the boss's time.

Boss's best response: "Write me a one page summary of what's important."

5. "Could you call them for me?"

This is an example of "delegating upward," which is when an employee has a difficult task and, rather than biting the bullet and getting it done, attempts to foists it onto the boss. This not only wastes the boss's time but encourages employee helplessness.

Boss's best response: "No, that's your job."

6. "Oops, I forgot to tell you about that."

The most important rule of the employee/boss relationship is "no surprises." As long as the boss isn't "shooting the messenger," it's the employee's job to surface difficulties long before they can turn into unpleasant surprises.

Boss's best response: "Your annual review will be affected if this happens repeatedly."

7. "I just need to vent..."

While it may provide the employee some emotional relief to complain about problems that don't have a solution, the boss is there to solve problems and move the team's agenda forward... not to be the employee's personal counselor.

Boss's best response: "Okay, but let's keep focused on what we've got to get done."

8. "Are you sure that's the right decision?"

The time to raise options and alternatives is before a decision is made. Once it's made, attempting to revisit the decision or second-guess it is wasted effort that would be better spent implementing the decision.

Boss's best response: "Yes."

멋지게 사는 거다

죽음에 직면하고 나자 나는 오히려 삶을 향한 갈망을 느끼게 됐다. 더 솔직히 표현하자면 나는 삶을 멋지게 살기를 갈구했다. 죽지 않고 살기로 했으면 기쁘고 즐겁게 사는 게 백번 낫지 않은가. 구사일생으로 살아난 내가 원망할 것이 뭐가 있겠는가. 인생이란 그저 태어나고 살아가는 것이니까. 태어났으면, 멋지게 사는 거다.

10살 때 고압선에 감전되어 기적적으로 살아났으나 두 팔을 잃어버린 류웨이. 그러나 손 대신 발가락으로 피아노를 치기 시작해 중국 최고의 피아니스트가 된 의지의 청년. 구사일생으로 다시 살아난 사람에게는 하루하루가 새롭고 경이롭습니다. 더 멋지게 살 수 있습니다.

꿀벌이 존경받는 까닭

꿀벌이 존경받는 까닭

꿀벌이 다른 곤충보다 존경받는 까닭은 부지런해서가 아니라 남을 위해 일하기 때문이다.

어느 봄날 과수원으로 배꽃 구경을 갔다가 사다리를 놓고 올라가 꽃가루 작업을 하는 농부들을 보았습니다. 함부로 사용한 농약과 일기 탓에 벌들의 숫자가 줄어 일일이 사람의 손으로 인공수분을 해주어야 좋은 열매를 얻을 수 있다고 했습니다.

꽃이 피면 벌들은 꿀을 모으기 위해 부지런히 꽃속을 드나들며 꽃가루를 묻혀 이꽃 저꽃으로 옮깁니다. 벌들 덕분에 우리들은 달고 탐스러운 과일을 먹을 수 있습니다. 일부러 벌들이 우리를 위해 꽃가루를 옮기지는 않을 것입니다. 자신들의 양식인 꿀을 모으기 위해 꽃을 옮겨다니다 보니 자연스레 그리 된 것이지요.

목숨 지닌 것치고 누구나 살기 위해 노력합니다. 자신을 위한 일을 하며 남에게도 도움을 줄 수 있다면 그보다 더 좋은 일은 없겠지요. 세상에서 가장 가치 있는 일은 남을 위해 봉사하는 일입니다. 꿀벌이 다른 곤충보다 존경받는 까닭이 남을 위해 일하는 때문이듯 다른 사람을 배려하고 남을 위해 봉사하는 사람이 점점 늘어가는 세상이었으면 좋겠습니다.
