전기스탠드가 넘어져 있었고, 쪽 카펫은 둘둘 말아 한쪽 벽에 기대어져 있었다. 앞방에서는 TV가 만화채널을 방송하고 있었고, 거실에는 장난감과 각종 옷들이 널브러져 있었다. 부엌에는 싱크통에 접시들이 가득하고, 아침밥은 카운터에 흩어져 있고 개밥은 마루위에 흩어져 있었다. 깨어진 유리잔이 테이블 밑에 나 뒹굴고, 뒷문 옆에는 조그만 모래더미가 쌓여 있었다.
그는 장남감들과 옷들을 밟고 계단을 뛰어 올라가 아내를 찾았다. 그는 아내가 아픈지, 아니면 더 나쁜일이 있는지 걱정되었다.
올라가보니 아내는 침실에서 아직도 파자마 차림에 소설을 읽으며 빈둥거리고 있었다.
그녀는 미소를 지으며 그를 쳐다보더니 오늘은 어땧느냐고 물었다. 그는 어리둥절하여 아내를 쳐다보고 물었다.
"오늘 집에 무슨 일이 있었어?"
그녀는 다시 웃으며 대답했다, "당신이 직장에서 돌아올때 마다 대체 오늘 뭘 했느냐고 물었죠?"
"그랬지." 그는 마지못해 대답했다.
아내가 대답했다, "오늘은 내가 아무일도 안했어요!!"
One afternoon a man came home from work to find total mayhem in his house. His three children were outside, still in their P.J.'s, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers thrown all about the front yard. The door to his wife’s car was open, as was the front door to the house. Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess.
A lamp had been knocked over, and a throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, Breakfast food was spilled on the counter, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand lay piled up by the back door.
He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and other piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried that she might be ill, or worse!!
He found her lounging into the bedroom, still in her pajamas, reading a novel.
She smiled, looked up at him and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, "What happened here today?"
She again smiled and answered, "you know everyday when you come home from work and ask me what in the world did
I do today?"
"Yes", he replied reluctantly.
She answered, "Well, today I didn't do it!!"
세상에는 중요하지만 해도 티가 안나는 일들이 있습니다. 집안 일도 그 중 하나입니다. 그러나 그런 일일수록 안하면 더 티가 납니다.
가끔씩 주위를 둘러보고 티가 안나지만 해야하는 일들을 하고 있는 사람들에게 감사할 줄 알아야 겠다는 생각이 듭니다.
