카네기 공대 졸업생을 추적 조사한 결과, 그들은 한결같이 이구동성으로 "성공하는 데 전문적인 지식이나 기술은 15퍼센트밖에 영향을 주지 않았으며, 나머지 85퍼센트가 인간관계였다.”고 말했습니다.
우리 주위의 성공한 사람들을 보면 하찮다고 생각할 만한 작은 일도 소홀히 하지 않고 잘 챙겨서, 여러 사람과 좋은 관계를 맺어온 것을 봅니다. 그들은 특히 '세 가지 방문’을 잘 했는데 ‘입의 방문'과‘손의 방문’'발의 방문’ 그 세 가지입니다.
입의 방문은 전화나 말로써 사람을 부드럽게 하며 칭찬하는 것이고 용기를 주는 방문입니다. 손의 방문은 편지를 써서 사랑하는 진솔한 마음을 전달하는 것이고, 발의 방문은 상대가 병들거나 어려움이 있을 때 찾아가는 것을 의미하는데 바로 이런 것을 잘하는 사람이 성공할 수 있고, 큰 일을 할 수 있습니다.
고기는 씹어야 맛이고, 말은 해야 맛입니다.
칭찬은 할수록 늘고, 편지는 쓸수록 감동을 주며, 어려운 이는 찾아갈수록 친근해집니다. 인간관계에 감동을 주는 사람은 오랫동안 기억에 남을 것입니다.

나이 드는 것의 미덕
첫번째는 목표를 갖는 것이고 두번째는 다른 사람들과 좋은 관계를 유지하는 것이다.

의학의 발달로 인간의 수명이 늘어나면서 후반부의 삶을 어찌 살아야 하는가에 대한 고민 또한 깊어진 게 사실입니다. 단순하게 얼마나 오래 사느냐보다는 얼마나 인생을 의미 있게, 행복하게 사는가가 더 중요하기 때문입니다.
나이 들어 건강하다면 얼마나 행복하고 얼마나 즐겁게 살 수 있는지는 의미있는 목표를 지녔는지의 여부와 다른 사람들과 좋은 관계를 유지하느냐에 달려 있습니다.

어느 날 한 아버지가 아들을 마차에 태우고 교외로 나가기 위해 마차를 몰았다. 그런데 마차가 커브길을 도는데 아들이 잘 붇잡지 않아서 마차에서 굴러떨어지고 말았다. 아버지는 마차를 세우더니 아들을 돌아볼뿐 내려오지도 않고 부추겨주지도 않고 마차에 앉아있었다.
마차에서 떨어진 아들은 다급하게 "아버지! 저좀 도와주세요"
"어디 다쳤냐? 어디가 아프냐?"
"네 다친덴 없는 것 같은데 일어날 수가 없을 것 같아요"
"일어날 수 없을 것 같으면 기어서라도 올라타거라"
아들은 할 수 없이 억지로 일어나 절둑거리면서 마차에 올라탔다.
그 때 마침 그 근방을 지나던 한 행인이 그 장면을 목격하고 아버지를 비난했다.
"너무하시는 군이요.아직 애인데"
아버지는 빙긋이 웃으면서 그러나 단호하게 대답했다.
"저 아이는 장차 이 나라에 대통령이 될 훈련을 하고 있는 겁니다"
이 아이가 훗날 미국의 대통령이 된 존 F 케네디 입니다.

"현재의 고난은 장차 우리에게 나타날 영광과 비교할 수 없도다"(로마서)
받은 글입니다.

괴테가 말하는 풍요로운 황혼
황혼에도 열정적인 사랑을 나누었던 괴테는 노년에 관한 유명한 말을 남긴다.
노인의 삶은 상실의 삶이다. 사람은 늙어가면서 다음 다섯 가지를 상실하며 살아가기 때문이다. 건강과 돈, 일과 친구, 그리고 꿈을 잃게된다. 죽지 않는자면 누구나가 맞이 하게 될 노년, 괴테의 말을 음미하며 준비를 소홀이 하지 않는다면 황혼도 풍요로울 수 있다.
건강
몸이 건강하지 못하면 세상 온갖 것이 의미 없다. 이제 남은 건강이라도 알뜰히 챙겨야 한다.
돈
스스로 노인 이라고 생각 한다면 이제는 돈을 벌때가 아니라 돈을 쓸 때이다.
일
죽을 때까지 삶을 지탱해 주는 것은 사랑과 일이다.
친구
