어떤 75세된 노인이 의사에게 건강진단을 받았는데 아주 건강했습니다. 그래서 의사가 노인에게 건강하게 산 비결을 이야기 해달라고 하자 노인은 이렇게 대답했습니다.

"50년 동안 결혼생활을 했는데 결혼초에 아내와 이런약속을 했지요. '내가 성이 나면 당신은 부엌으로 나가고 당신이 화가 나면 내가 산책을 나가겠소'라는 거였지요. 지나고 생각해 보니 정말 산책을 많이 했습니다. 그래서 건강해진 거지요 허허"

멋진 부부싸움 방지 법이지요? 건강도 유지하고 격한 감정에 서로 마음에도 없는 말을 하지도 않게 되고.....,

[Humor] Johnny and a nickel

There was a little boy named Johnny who used to hang out at the local corner market. The owner didn't know what Johnny's problem was, but the boys would constantly tease him.

They would always comment that he was two bricks shy of a load, or two pickles short of a barrel. To prove it, sometimes they would offer Johnny his choice between a nickel (5 cents) and a dime (10 cents) and John would always take the nickel -- they said, because it was bigger.

One day after John grabbed the nickel, the store owner took him aside and said "Johnny, those boys are making fun of you. They think you don't know the dime is worth more than the nickel. Are you grabbing the nickel because it's bigger, or what?"

Slowly, Johnny turned toward the store owner and a big grin appeared on his face and Johnny said, "Well, if I took the dime, they'd stop doing it, and so far I have saved $20!"

동네 코너 마켓에 자주 나타나는 '자니'라고 부르는 꼬마 소년이 있었다. 마켓 주인은 자니에게 무슨 문제가 있는지 모르고 있었지만 아이들은 계속 자니를 놀리곤 하였다.

아이들은 항상 자니가 머리가 좀 모자란다고 말하고 있었다. 그걸 증명하기 위하여 아이들은 자니에게 백동화(5센트 짜리) 한개와 다임(10센트 짜리) 한개중 하나를 선택하라고 하면 자니는 항상 백동화를 택했다---아이들은 백동화가 더 크기 때문이라고 말했다.

어느날 자니가 백동화를 집어든 뒤 마켓 주인은 자니를 자기 옆으로 불러서 말했다, "자니야, 저애들은 너를 놀리고 있어, 애들은 네가 다임이 백동화 보다 더 값나가는 것을 모르고 있다고 생각한단 말이야. 너는 백동화가 더 커서 집은거야, 아니면 뭣 때문이야?"

자니는 천천히 마켓 주인을 돌아보며 씩 웃고는 말했다, "그건, 만약 내가 다임을 집어들면 아이들이 그걸 계속하지 않을 거 아니예요, 이제까지 20달러를 모았어요!"

어느 도예가의 말씀

어느 도예가의 말씀

무심(無心)이 예술이라고 말하는 어느 도예가는 잘 만들겠다는 욕심을 버리고 오로지 작품에 대한 경건함으로 작업에 몰두한다고 합니다. 분청사기의 대가로 꼽히는 그는, 해외에 우리의 도자예술을 알리는데 일조하고 있습니다. 말이 쉽지, 욕심 없는 작품 활동이 있겠습니까. 다만, 결과물에 대한 평가에 너무 연연하지 않고 오직 작품자체에만 매달리는 정신이 중요할 겁니다.

'좋은 도자기를 만들려면 사토, 점토, 고령토를 잘 배합해 좋은 흙을 만들고, 그 흙으로 잘 빚어야 합니다. 그것을 또 정교하게 조각하고 정성스럽게 말려서 초벌구이하지요. 마지막으로 유약을 칠해서 다시 구우며 불의 심판을 받는데, 여기서 살아남아야 작품이 되는 것입니다. 인생도 마찬가지인 것 같아요. 옳은 사람이 되려면 이런 고생의 고비와 어려움을 다 겪어야 하니까요.'

그의 말처럼, 명작은 그냥 만들어지는 것이 아니고 장인이라는 호칭은 거저 얻어지는 것이 아닌 것은 분명합니다. 하는 일이 잘 풀리지 않는다고, 힘들다고 주저앉아있던 내게 그의 말을 가만가만 들려줍니다.
