분노를 옮기지 마라!

안녕하십니까? 박재희입니다.
나는 평생 새로운 것을 배우기 좋아한다. 나는 아무리 화가 나도 주변 사람에게 그 화를 풀지 않는다. 나는 한번 저질렀던 잘못을 두 번 세 번 반복하지는 않는다. 모두 정말 모두 쉽지 않은 덕목들일 겁니다. 우리는 과연 이 중 몇 가지나 가능할까요?

공자의 제자 중에 안회(顔回)라는 사람이 바로 이런 능력을 가진 사람이었다고 합니다. 공자가 그의 제자들 중에서 누구보다 아꼈던 수제자 안회. 젊은 나이에 요절한 불운의 사나이기도 한 안회는 맹자와 함께 유교의 인물 중에서 공자 다음으로 자주 거론되는 인물이기도 합니다.

어느 날 그가 머리가 갑자기 하얗게 새어가며 원인도 모르고 죽었을 때 공자는 “천상여(天喪予)! 천상여(天喪予)!” 하늘이 나를 버렸구나! 하늘이 나를 버렸구나! 하면서 제자의 죽음에 통곡하였습니다. 공자가 73세의 인생을 살면서 먼저 세상을 떠나보낸 제자가 한 둘이 아닐진대 그토록 애통하게 제자의 죽음에 슬퍼한 적은 없었습니다.

너무 슬피 우는 공자에게 어느 제자가 너무 애통해 한다고 하자, 공자는 ‘이 사람을 위해 울지 않으면 누구를 위해 우냐’며 통곡하였던 이야기는 스승의 제자에 대한 애절한 마음을 고스란히 전해주는 이야기입니다.

비록 가난한 삶을 살다간 안회였지만 그의 삶에 대한 공자의 평가는 대단합니다. ‘현명하다! 회야(賢哉라 回也여)! 한 대죽그릇의 거친 밥과 한 표주박의 물을 먹으며 누추한 빈민가에서 사는 것을(一簞食, 一瓢飮, 在陋巷을) 다른 사람들은 그 근심을 감당하지 못하는데(人不堪其憂어늘) 너는 그 가난 때문에 너의 인생의 즐거움을 바꾸지 않는구나(回也不改其樂이라!) 현명하다! 안회야(賢哉라, 回也여)!’

일명 ‘거친 밥에 물 말아 먹고 사는 궁핍함 속에서도 즐거움을 찾는다.’는 ‘단사표음(簞食瓢飮)’의 고사도 안회에 대한 공자의 평가에서 유래된 이야기 입니다. 이런 안회에 대한 평가 중에 가장 백미가. 공자가 살던 노(魯)나라 임금이었던 애공(哀公)의 물음에 대한 공자의 대답입니다. 공자는 다음과 같은 세 가지 이유로 안회야 말로 자신의 수제자임을 공인합니다.

첫째 안회는 배우기를 좋아한 제자다. 좋아할 호자, 배울 학자. 호학(好學)이라! 배움은 공자의 영원한 삶의 주제였습니다. 공자는 스스로 배우는 자라고 칭하였고 그 배움의 결과를 전하는 선생이야 말로 그의 평생의 업이자 사명이었습니다.

그런 그의 삶의 방법에 가장 근접한 제자. 바로 안회였던 것이죠. 죽고 나서 가장 갖고 싶은 칭호는 학생입니다. 평생 배우다 간사람, 이렇게 기억되는 것이 진정 아름다운 인생이 아닐까요?

둘째 안회는 자신의 분노를 남에게 옮기지 않았다. 아니 불자, 옮길 천자, 성낼 노자, 불천노(不遷怒)라! 대부분의 사람들이 자신의 분노를 어디든 풀려고 합니다. 그러나 안회는 자신의 분노를 속으로 삭이며 멈출 줄 알았던 인물이었습니다. 나의 분노를 주변 사람에게 전가하는 것처럼 비겁한 일은 없습니다. 자신의 분노를 사길 줄 아는 사람이야말로 진정 완성된 인격의 소유자가 아닐까요?

셋째 안회는 한 번 저지른 과오를 두 번 다시 반복하지 않았다. 불이과(不二過)라! 사람은 누구나 실수를 할 수 있지만 두 번 반복한다면 문제가 있다는 것입니다. 한번 실수로 그칠 수 있는 사람, 그런 사람이 바로 안연이었습니다. 잘못을 하는 것이 문제가 아니라 그 잘못을 두 번 저지르는 것인 문제라고 합니다. 잘못을 떳떳하게 인정하고 과감하게 고치는 사람이 진정 성공하는 자 일겁니다.

여러분! 세상에 어느 누가 완성된 지식을 가진 사람이 있겠습니까? 한 때 잘 배운 사람보다는 평생 배우기를 좋아하는 사람이 이 시대에 진정 성공할 수 있는 사람일 겁니다. 세상에 누가 분노하지 않는 사람이 있겠습니까?

분노를 참는 사람보다는 주변에 그 분노를 옮기지 않는 사람이 진정 아름다운 사람일 겁니다. 세상에 누가 잘못하지 않는 사람이 있겠습니까? 잘못을 아예 안 하는 사람보다는 한 번 한 잘못을 두 번 반복하지 않는 사람이 더욱 현명한 사람일 겁니다.

평생 배우기를 좋아하고, 남에게 화내지 않고, 잘못을 인정하며 고치기를 두려워하지 않는 그런 삶을 살아갔으면 좋겠습니다.

Description	English: The Common Jezebel (Delias eucharis) is a medium sized pierid butterfly found in many areas of South and Southeast Asia, especially in the non-arid regions of India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. The Common Jezebel is one of the most common species in the genus Delias. The butterfly may be found wherever there are trees, even in towns and cities, flies high among the trees and comes lower down only to feed on nectar in flowers. It rests with its wings closed exhibiting the brilliantly coloured underside. Due to this habit apparently, it has evolved a dull upper-side and a brilliant underside so that birds below it recognise it immediately while in flight and at rest.
