더하기와 빼기

더하기와 빼기

세월이 더하기를 할수록 삶은 자꾸 빼기를 하고
욕심이 더하기를 할수록 행복은 자꾸 빼기를 한다.

똑똑한 사람은 더하기만 잘 하는 것이 아니고
빼기도 잘 하는 사람이다.
훌륭한 사람은 벌기만 잘 하는 것이 아니고
나누어 주기도 잘 하는 사람이다.

노를 젓다가
노를 놓쳐 버렸다
비로소 넓은 물을 돌아다 보았다…..

한 곳에 몰두하다가 잊고 놓치고 있던 일들이 없는지 돌아보실 수 있는 여유가 필요한 시점이라고 생각됩니다. 한번쯤은 멀리, 넓게 보시는 시간을 가져 보시면 어떨까 합니다.

보스와 리더

안녕하세요?

오늘은 문득 보스와 리더의 차이가 무엇인가에 대해서 생각을 해보게 되었습니다. 우리의 지식인에게 물어보니 이런 그림이 있었습니다. 절대적이지는 않지만 일부분이라 생각됩니다. 오늘은 왠지 보스와 리더의 차이라는 생각이 하루 종일 뇌리에 머물 것 같습니다.

안녕하십니까? 박재희입니다.

자고 나면 터지는 숱한 사건 주변에는 서로에게 책임을 전가하고 잘못을 탓하는 공방전이 벌어진다.

아랫사람은 윗사람을 끌어내리려 하고, 윗사람은 아랫사람을 능멸하려 한다. 당사자는 상황에 책임을 돌리고, 방관자는 당사자에게 모든 책임을 지라고 한다. 모든 책임은 나에게 있는 것이 아니라 남에게 있다는 책임 전가가 사회에 만연되어 있다. 아무도 책임지려 하지 않는 그런 사회를 살고 있는 것이다.

성숙한 사람은 남에게 책임을 묻지 않는다. 군자와 선비는 자신에게 책임을 묻는 사람이다.

불원천(不怨天)! 하늘을 원망하지 말라! 불우인(不尤人)! 남을 탓하지 마라! 선비들이 인생을 살다가 어렵고 힘든 상황에 처할 때 마다 외쳤던 인생의 화두였다. <중용(中庸)>에 나오는 ‘내 탓이오!’ 철학은 남 탓으로 자신의 잘못을 가리려 하는 오늘날 세태에 책임의식이 무엇인지를 잘 보여준다.

‘재상위불릉하(在上位不陵下)! 윗자리에 있는 사람들이여! 아랫사람을 함부로 능멸하지 마라!
재하위불원상(在下位 不援上)! 아랫자리에 있는 사람들이여! 함부로 윗사람을 끌어내리려 하지 마라!
정기이불구어인즉무원(正己而不求於人則無怨)! 나를 먼저 바르게 하고 남을 탓하지 말라! 그러면 누구에게도 원망을 사지 않을 것이다. 상불원천(上不怨天)! 위로는 하늘을 원망하지 말고, 하불우인(下不尤人)! 아래로는 남을 허물하지 말라!’

'중용'에 나오는 명 구절이다.

세상을 살다보면 힘들고 어려운 일이 닥치기 마련이다.

그럴 때 마다 조상을 탓하고, 하늘을 원망하고, 주변 사람을 허물하면 결국 그 역경과 고통은 더욱 나를 힘들게 할 뿐이다. 세상의 모든 잘못을 결국 나에게 있다는 생각은 아름답다.

남을 탓하거나 원망하는 것보다 자신을 먼저 돌아보는 것이 진정 책임질 줄 아는 사람의 모습이기 때문이다.

그래서 당당하게 자신의 책임을 인정하고 내 탓이라고 외칠 수 있는 사람은 존경을 받을 수밖에 없다. 공자는 활쏘기를 통해 군자의 책임의식을 비유하고 있다. 활을 쏘아 과녁에 맞히지 못했을 때 결국 모든 책임은 활 쏘는 사람에게 있다는 것이다.

사자유사호군자(射有似乎君子), 활을 쏘는 것은 군자의 모습과 유사하다!
실저정곡(失諸正鵠), 내가 활을 쏘아 과녁에 제대로 맞추지 못하면,
반구저기신(反求諸其身), 돌이켜 자신에게서 그 책임을 물어야 한다.

‘반구저신(反求諸身)’이라는 4자 성어가 나오는 중용의 구절이다.

서로에게 책임을 묻지 말고 스스로 책임지고 반성하는 자세가 필요하다는 대목에서 이 구절을 사용하였다고 한다. 궁수가 활을 쏠 때 바람이 갑자기 불어 안 맞을 수도 있고, 활의 성능이 안 좋아 안 맞을 수도 있다.

옆에 사람이 성가시게 굴어서 문제가 될 수도 있고 과녁이 너무 멀어 적중하지 않을 수도 있다. 그러나 무엇보다 중요한 것은 결국 활 쏘는 사수의 문제다. ‘내 탓이오!’ 라고 외치는 사수(射手)가 진정 군자의 모습과 닮아 있다는 것이다.

운명(運命)이란 글자 그대로 나에게 다가온 상황(命)을 내가 통제(運)하는 것이다.

남을 탓하거나 원망한다고 그 운명이 바뀌는 것은 아니다. 다가온 운명에 최선을 다하며 묵묵히 견뎌나갈 때 진정 운명은 내 손아귀에 놓이게 되는 것이다. 운명을 이해하고 내 탓으로 받아들일 때 진정 자득(自得)한 선비의 모습이 깃드는 것이다.
