요즘 친일 진상규명 문제를 놓고 정치권 안팎이 시끄럽다. 한쪽에선 부끄러운 과거를 숨기려고 하고, 또 한쪽에선 애써 그것을 들추어내어 세상에 밝히려고 한다. 숨기려는 것이나 들추어내려는 것이나 다 부끄러운 일임에는 틀림이 없다. 사실 그보다 선행되어야 할 것이 부끄러운 사람들의 참회가 아닐까 싶다. 참회는 과거의 부끄러움을 세상에 밝히는 일이며, 그 죄를 뒤늦게나마 씻어내는 일이다. 과거의 부끄러움을 씻어내는 일은 마음의 때를 벗겨내는 일이기 때문에 매우 어렵다. 몸에 붙은 때는 물로 씻어내면 되지만 마음의 때는 ‘참회’라는 고통을 전제하지 않고는 씻어내기 어려운 것이다. 참회는 스스로의 몸에 채찍을 가하는 일이고, 만천하에 알려서 많은 사람들로부터 날아오는 돌을 스스로 맞는 일이다. 아니 그냥 맞기만 하는 것이 아니라 그 아픔을 감내하며 끝없이 자신의 과거 잘못을 속죄해야 하는 것이다. 언젠가 텔레비전에서 팔순 가까이 된 노인이 마을 청소를 하는 장면을 보았다. 그는 벌써 10여 년 전부터 누가 시키지도 않는데 스스로 나서서 마을 청소를 해오고 있다고 한다. 매일 새벽 하루도 쉬지 않고 마을 곳곳을 돌아다니며 허리 굽혀 길바닥에 떨어진 휴지를 줍고, 가득 넘쳐나는 쓰레기통을 비우고, 떨어지는 낙엽을 모아 불태우는 것이었다. 이렇게 열심히 청소하는 노인 때문에 그 마을은 아주 깨끗한 거리가 되었고, 그 거리를 오가는 사람들 사이에선 저절로 웃음꽃이 피어났다. 마을 사람들은 입이 닳도록 노인을 칭송해마지 않았지만, 왜 그가 그토록 열심히 청소를 하는지에 대해서는 잘 알지 못하였다. 그런데 어떻게 텔레비전 뉴스 기자가 그 노인의 선행에 대한 정보를 접하고 무비 카메라를 휴대한 채 찾아간 모양이다. 뉴스의 화면은 먼저 마을 사람들의 증언을 차례로 듣고 나서, 그 증언의 사실 확인에 들어갔다. 즉 노인이 새벽부터 집에서 나와 어떻게 마을 청소를 하는지 그 모습을 생생하게 담아내고 있었다. 노인의 손에는 빗자루와 쓰레받기, 그리고 쓰레기를 담을 비닐봉...
