Understanding the Phenomenon

The Ferranti Effect is a critical phenomenon in electrical engineering where the receiving-end voltage of a long transmission line becomes remarkably higher than the sending-end voltage. Discovered by Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti in 1887, this effect typically occurs under no-load or extremely light-load conditions.

The root cause lies in the inherent capacitance of long power lines. When the load is minimal, this capacitance draws a leading charging current. As this leading current travels through the line's natural inductance, it produces a voltage rise rather than a voltage drop. This is particularly pronounced in long underground cables where capacitance is significantly higher than in overhead lines.

If left unmanaged, the elevated voltage can severely degrade the insulation of power grid equipment, leading to catastrophic transformer or circuit breaker failures. To mitigate this risk, grid operators deploy shunt reactors at the receiving end to absorb the excess reactive power, or operate synchronous condensers in an under-excited state to ensure grid stability.
