Grid Integration in Solar PV: Overhead vs. Underground Transmission

Grid Integration in Solar PV: Overhead vs. Underground Transmission

In the domain of utility-scale and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation, the methodology of transmitting generated electricity to the national grid is a critical infrastructure decision. This process, known as grid integration, primarily utilizes two distinct approaches: Overhead (가공) and Underground (지중) lines.

1. Overhead Lines (가공)

The overhead transmission method involves suspending electrical cables in the air, supported by utility poles or transmission towers. This is the traditional and most widely observed method globally.

The primary advantage of overhead lines lies in economic efficiency. The initial capital expenditure (CAPEX) is significantly lower, and the installation timeframe is notably shorter. Furthermore, in the event of electrical faults, the exposed nature of the infrastructure facilitates rapid visual inspection and straightforward maintenance. However, this method is fundamentally vulnerable to environmental factors, including extreme weather conditions such as typhoons and heavy snowfall, which can compromise grid stability. Additionally, the visual impact on the landscape often provokes public opposition in residential or ecologically sensitive areas.

2. Underground Lines (지중)

Conversely, the underground approach involves excavating the earth to lay protective conduits through which the transmission cables are routed. This methodology is increasingly adopted in urban planning and modern infrastructural developments.

Underground systems offer unparalleled stability and resilience against meteorological disturbances, significantly reducing the probability of weather-induced power outages. Aesthetically, it provides a clean, unobstructed environment, thereby minimizing friction with local communities. The primary deterrent, however, is the substantial financial requirement. The excavation and specialized materials typically elevate initial construction costs by a factor of two to three compared to overhead lines. Moreover, maintenance operations are complex and costly, as locating and repairing subterranean faults requires specialized equipment and re-excavation.

(Overhead Lines)

(Underground Lines)
