Soft Landing

In economics and finance, a Soft Landing refers to a cyclical slowdown in economic growth that successfully avoids a recession. It is the ultimate, yet difficult-to-achieve, goal of a central bank (such as the US Federal Reserve) when it intervenes in the economy by raising interest rates to combat high inflation. The central bank must execute a delicate balancing act: it needs to cool down the economy just enough to bring soaring prices under control, but not so much that it triggers a severe spike in unemployment or negative corporate growth. If they raise rates too aggressively, it leads to a "Hard Landing." Recently, this term has been everywhere in the news as investors closely watch data to see if central banks have achieved this rare economic feat in the post-pandemic era.
